Current Labs

Violin Lab — Christine Faught

Beginner cohort started Jan 2027 in Port Angeles, Fridays at 1:30pm.

This group class is for adults who want to learn violin from the ground up in a supportive, low-pressure environment. We'll develop essential violin skills using the Suzuki method as a guiding framework while drawing from additional approaches as they serve the group.

Emphasis is placed on tone, listening skills, rhythm, and healthy beginner technique. Questions are welcome, curiosity is encouraged, and mistakes are treated as part of the learning process. No prior musical experience is required.

Viola Lab — Anne Burns

Beginner cohort starting March 2027 in Sequim, Tuesdays at 6pm.

This class welcomes absolute beginner violists as well as folks with some viola playing experience and students switching from other instruments. We will cover note reading, learning a new clef, differences between violin and viola technique, and musical discovery. The only requirement is a desire to learn to play the viola. Join us for fun and friendship.

Cello Lab — TBD

Cohort start date TBD. Tentatively September 2026 or January 2027.

To express interest in a Cello Lab and give your location and time preferences, please fill out the Adult Strings Interest Survey .

FAQ

  • Who are these labs for? Adults and students 14 and above with no experience on the instrument specified. Switchers from other instruments are welcome and encouraged to join.
  • Should I have private lessons along with these classes? Yes. Although it is not required, we strongly encourage students to meet a second time per week with a teacher for one-on-one instruction. Private lessons are arranged directly with the teacher outside of these courses.
  • Where are these group courses located? Either Port Angeles or Sequim, depending on where the majority of interested students in a cohort are located.
  • When do these courses run? Weekly times are determined based on the preferences of the participating students and may be daytime, evening, or weekends.
  • When can I start if I missed the registration start date? Students may enroll in new cohorts until the third week of class with permission from the registrar. After that, students will be referred to the teacher to discuss prerequisites. If space allows, students may also join after the first term if they meet the cohort’s technical requirements.
  • How long do these courses run? Students are generally expected to remain with their cohort until they have the skills needed to join the SCO. Progress depends on the group. Students enroll one term at a time, and each term is eight weeks long.
  • What if too many students drop between terms? If a cohort drops below three students, the teacher may combine it with another cohort, combine with another instrument group with similar prerequisites, or offer one-on-one lessons at their own pricing.
  • When will a new cohort start for my instrument? When enough students express interest in a particular town and time, and a qualified teacher is available. To indicate interest, please complete the Adult Strings Interest Survey . Generally we do not start new cohorts for an instrument more than once per year.
